Malawi has the capacity to generate 439 megawatts (MW), though Malawi’s heavy reliance on large hydro is often constrained by drought and low water levels. Moving forward, there is high potential for solar and new hydro technologies to enter into the power market.

Households use for cooking and heating: 81% Firewood, 16% Charcoal, 2% Electricity, 1% Crop residue. Nearly 4.6 million more people use firewood and charcoal now than in 2005.Based on a recent study, between 2019 and 2025 Malawi’s demand for wood fuel will exceed sustainable supply.
